As part of our ongoing outreach to teachers in rural areas, the Bill of Rights Institute completed a series of workshops in North Dakota last month.

The series included two virtual sessions and an in-person workshop in Bismarck, all of which were attended by a total of 17 teachers. The first session, conducted by Lori Rech, BRI’s regional manager of programs, and Shawn McCusker, senior manager of program partnerships, introduced North Dakota teachers to BRI and included a “scavenger hunt” that allowed teachers to search BRI’s website and review our various resources.

Teachers also learned how BRI’s resources could align with North Dakota’s standards for social studies education and worked on lessons they can use with their students during the current school year.

The in-person workshop in Bismarck allowed teachers to continue learning how BRI resources could meet their state’s social studies education standards and create inquiry-based lessons for their studies. Teachers also tried out various BRI games, participated in writing activities, and learned additional strategies for civil discourse.

The North Dakota workshops concluded with Rech meeting virtually with teachers. They shared the lessons they taught their students, reflected on what went well and what they would change or modify, and what their students learned from BRI’s resources and the activities from the in-person workshop.
