Graphic Organizer: An “Apple of Gold” in a “Picture of Silver” Activity

Guiding Questions: What is the relationship between the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution? How do these Founding documents reflect common republican principles?

  • I can analyze the relationship between the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

Instructions

  1. Draw a picture frame like the one to the right on your own paper. Your frame should take up the whole page.
  2. In the top section of the frame, write one of the principles from the Constitution.
  3. In the bottom, write the phrase from the Constitution that illustrates this principle.
  4. On the left side, write the definition of this principle in your own words.
  5. On the right side, write why this principle is important to good governance.
  6. At the top of the center part of the frame, write the phrase from the Declaration of Independence that illustrates this principle.
  7. In the center of the frame, draw or compile a collage of at least four pictures that illustrate this principle at work in the United States today. Underneath each picture, explain how each illustration depicts the principle.
  8. On the back, write how YOU should act to ensure that “neither picture, or apple shall ever be blurred, or bruised or broken.”
