February 2006: The Institute publishes Faces of Freedom in American History and Conflict and Continuity: The Story of American Freedom. With plans to create a museum dedicated to freedom, the McCormick Foundation collaborated with the Bill of Rights Institute to produce educational materials that teachers could use to teach about First Amendment freedoms or prepare students for a field trip to what became the Freedom Museum. The Institute created a Museum Teacher Advisory Committee to provide input about teaching freedom of speech, press, religion, and assembly. Several of the teachers on this committee helped the Institute produce two curricular materials. For middle school students, Faces in American History provides an engaging and thought-provoking look at how important Americans have used the First Amendment to preserve and expand our freedoms. At the same time, the Institute released a book exploring specific challenges to First Amendment freedoms in American History in a high school level curriculum, titled Conflict and Continuity: The Story of American Freedom.
