August 2004:
The Institute publishes Being an American: Exploring the Ideals That Unite Us.
Following the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001, the Institute, with generous support from the Hatton W. Sumners Foundation, created a curriculum focused on the values that define the American way of life. The result was Being an American: Exploring the Ideals that Unite Us, a concise and focused resource book that emphasizes the Founding documents, the civic values, and heroes that define our American way of life. Being an American invites students to actively engage with these ideas and reflect on their responsibilities as citizens through activities, analysis, and critical thinking exercises.
In Fall of 2008, the Institute issued a second edition of the book, with updated lessons, a new lesson on the Declaration of Independence, and continuously-updated online activities.
